Chief Information Officer Shawn Riley today congratulated ten North Dakota students who received national recognition by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), as well as Valley City State University student Shane Hitch who was a top-five finisher in a Capture the Flag cybersecurity competition hosted by NICERC, the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center. The CTF was held in conjunction with the first-of-its-kind technology focused, multi-industry career expo, Dakota Strike, scheduled for April 8 at the Fargodome, which was cancelled due to COVID-19.

A statewide Hour of Code is planned with dozens of school districts on Thursday, Dec. 12 as part of a nationwide, annual event hosted by Code.org. Held in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week and coordinated by Microsoft, the event is part of a broader effort to give students of all ages opportunities to learn about coding and computer science as foundational 21st century skills.

The K-20W Initiative, a statewide, comprehensive approach to cybersecurity education and workforce training, has been named a CSO50 Award winner. Code named “K-20W” to reflect every student from kindergarten through PhD and workforce, the K-20W coalition is comprised of more than 40 public and private sector participants who share a goal of  “Every Student. Every School. Cyber Educated.“ The Initiative was also the recipient of a Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service and was a Center for Digital Government Government Experience Award Finalist.
