What is happening
NDIT is implementing security controls to block the use of DeepSeek, a Chinese-developed artificial intelligence application, from state-issued devices.
When
March 10, 2025
Why are controls being implemented
DeepSeek poses a critical risk to State of North Dakota data and systems. NDIT security performed a risk assessment on DeepSeek and identified several critical risks, especially:
- Collection of large amounts of personal information from users.
- Data stored in China, including user inputs and keystroke patterns.
- Sharing and selling of information to third-parties without consent.
A recent DeepSeek incident exposed over 1 million records in January 2025, leading to further data security and privacy concerns through the use of this application.
What is the impact
State agency team members will not be able to access DeepSeek using a state-issued device.
