North Dakota Chief Information Officer Shawn Riley today announced Michael Gregg as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). Gregg was acting as interim CISO and prior to that was the director of cyber operations for the State of North Dakota. He brings more than two decades of experience in information security and risk management. In addition to performing security management, audits, and assessments, Michael has authored or coauthored more than 25 books, has testified before the U.S. Congress, and has had articles published on various IT websites.  

“North Dakota is leading the nation in cyber defense with a whole-of-government approach, and Michael will ensure that we continue to expand our capabilities to make safe the data of every citizen and resident,” said Riley. “He continues to be a great asset to our team by assuming this new role and we are looking forward to the growth of the cybersecurity team under his leadership. ”  

“I am excited about this new role,” said Michael. “First, we will be focused on the basics, end point protection, vulnerability management, third party risk management, and user awareness training. We will further protect what matters most for the state and be better prepared to react properly to pertinent threats.” 

Michael Gregg has over two decades of experience in information security and risk management. He holds two associate degrees, a bachelor’s degree, and a master’s degree. He holds multiple security certifications such as CISSP, CISA, CISM, and CGEIT. Michael previously was the director of cyber operations for the State of North Dakota. In addition to his experience performing security management, audits, and assessments, Michael has authored or coauthored more than 25 books, has testified before the U.S. Congress, has had articles published on various IT websites, and he has been sourced as a cyber security expert. 

Gregg fills the role previously held by Kevin Ford, who has taken the position of CISO for Esri. 

Michael will begin his new role Nov. 1.
